The last 48 hours have been slightly frustrating, well, not so much frustrating, just no good from my project and deadline. I applied for this job Ian recommend for DW Studios, which in all honesty is a shot in the dark because I haven’t done any motion graphics, but I thought I’d apply anyway, you never know. The thing is that I understood they just wanted to meet up and have a conversation with anyone interested in the position, but instead, they asked for my CV and portfolio. Both I had to develop and update, which took some time, especially developing a brand identity for myself. I decided to go with a bold headline type in Avenir Next that I paired with a Museo Sans Rounded for the text body, over a crisp white and vintage colours, green and pink. Of course, It ended up being a long progress because I couldn’t really do my portfolio until I’d done my CV, as they needed to be suited.
My custom design portfolio: http://drewgooddesign.myportfolio.com/
and my CV:
I’ve been thinking about it and I like the idea of showcasing my different projects on the back of the cards, so maybe 3 different cards, but all with the same front. As I want to promote myself as a creative, I think showcasing the variety of work I can do is a good call. For example:
I want to show my diversity when it comes to design and the best way to do that is through my business cards, because my portfolio with have my strongest project, but doesn’t show the ways I can work.
After playing around with some colours and type I’ve created this, which I’m kind of happy with:
I do realise at the end of the day I’m not going to like anything I design, but we’ll see.
As we have to start applying for jobs pretty soon, well…like now, I need to work on my self promotion material, oh and we need business cards for our show WHICH IS IN 3 WEEKS!!
This is what I did last year, but I’m not happy about it:
I was thinking about the conversation I had with Neil Angove the other day, where we where discussing the role and advantages of being a graphic designer, which is like none other profession, where he stopped me when I labeled myself as a graphic designers and said that I was a ‘creative’, and I couldn’t agree more. I might specialise in Graphics, but what I’ve learnt this year is that I come up with creative solutions to problems. So Instead, I intend to label myself as ‘A Creative‘
I’m going to research business cards, where I can get them, finishes, designers professional’s cards, etc…
With no new projects this FINAL TERM, saying it still sounds odd, the prime focus is our future employment. We have 6 weeks, well 7 including this one, to get our portfolio’s up to scratch, this involves developing and finishing the projects we’ve done so far this year, based on the feedback we received.
I’ve been thinking about which projects I want to include, I’m looking at no more than 4 projects/sections with a nice variety, showcasing a number of different skills/platforms and design types e.g. branding, packaging, print, app, etc. We did a project on self promotion last year and I created a portfolio on Boxfolio:
And it was terrible, but customisable.
I discovered that with my Adobe Creative Cloud membership, I get access to Adobe Portfolio, which teamed up with Behance, allows me to create a completely customisable website for my work, while also adding all my projects to my Behance page.
Behance: So while my Adobe Portfolio is under construction, I’m using this as a primary site, but as you see, the difference between the two is massive.
I think because I’m currently working on them, SSP and The Big Idea, are two I definitely intend to include.
SSP because of the different design outcomes ‘video’, ‘branding’ and ‘publication & print’.
The Big Idea because I’m really passionate and proud of the outcome ‘Serendipity: A Designers Guide’ which will be a ‘publication’ both a physical printed version, and possibly a e-book, for downloading, but thats something I’m yet to decide on.
I want to include ‘Real World’ as it is work that I got a first for, and our group’s outcome, the badges’ got commissioned and used, plus from a design point of view it’s not like any other project. I think I need to do some work on presenting it.
and….? That’s the question! There’s Competition ‘Fever Tree’
‘Penguin book covers’
projects from least year
personal stuff ‘Polaroid vision’ ‘Cv design’ ‘Logos’ etc..
